Bag Rack Inventor Markets To The Traveler
Nov 30th 2012, 15:54

Ever wish you had some way to hold your bag open for you, while you try to stuff it with whatever you need? That is just one of the many uses the Bag Rack has. Drew Schiller, the man behind the rack, is hoping to add travel to that list.

The all American-made BagRack – moulded by a manufacturer in Indiana and packaged in Kentucky – includes a universal adapter which it's claimed allows consumers to hang grocery or trash bags "from the top, the side or from underneath any smooth non-porous surface: glass, metal, plastic (and) fibreglass."

Assembly of the back rack is a breeze. The most critical element is – of course – finding a suitable surface from which to hang it or attach it. Some interior work surfaces can be temperamental and other factors like dirt, motion, or changes in temperature may affect adhesion of the suction cups.

The physical strength of the plastic bag also comes into play, open it too wide and the bag handles lose their inherent structural strength. "The whole concept of my design is to hold it (the bag) open in its strongest position. So it only holds it open four inches" said Schiller.

It has taken BagRack Systems just over two years to bring the product to market. "I definitely followed the route of trial and error" said Schiller, whose first prototype was manufactured out of Styrofoam, then a coat hanger, hardwood, and Stereolithography (SLA®) before arriving at the ultimate plastic moulded version. Although Schiller didn't have the advantage of an engineering degree – he has a BSc in Business – he's always been a self-starter. "I've always been a problem solver and a creative person," he said. "I'd always be thinking about better ways to do things."

Colorado Drug Investigators Concerned Over Legalizing Marijuana
Nov 30th 2012, 17:18

DENVER (CBS4)- The head of the Colorado Drug Investigators Association believes that voters in Colorado were duped by Amendment 64 and that legalizing marijuana will be a fiasco.

The harsh prediction comes as Gov. John Hickenlooper sets up a task force to deal with implementing the measure on the state level and corresponding with federal law which maintains that marijuana in any form or amount is illegal.

“It’s going to create a huge fiasco,” said Colorado Drug Investigators Association spokesman Ernie Martinez.

Martinez believes marijuana will be too easy to obtain.

“We’re going to see a marked increase among drug use for youth and teens for the simple reason availability is going to increase,” said Martinez.

The concerns include the availability of marijuana in shops and cafes, being legal for convicted felons and the mentally ill, difficulty controlling residential growing and car accidents involving people under the influence.

“Like big tobacco duped the public into thinking tobacco is good for you, the voters were duped into voting that marijuana was good for them,” said Martinez.

Others perceive a different future with legalization of marijuana.

“This measure is going to show people that legalization is positive, safe, saves us money, keeps the courts from being clogged up with marijuana cases,” said attorney Rob Correy.

Correy also predicts that marijuana tourism will soon make Colorado a destination.

According to the CDIA website, “The Mission of the Colorado Drug Investigators Association (CDIA) is to unite peace officers and other professionals who share a common interest in drug enforcement, in a collaborative effort to reduce the supply and demand of illicit drugs and illegally diverted legal drugs by providing quality training, open information exchange and speaking with one voice in support of effective legislation.”

Opinion: Susan Rice Thrown Under Democrat's Bus And Tied Down
Nov 30th 2012, 17:00

The Right Politics

As President Barack Obama, the White House, the Democratic Party politicians and the nation’s “leftists” allege that the Republicans – led by the Senators in Congress – are picking on the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, it is becoming more and more clear that it was not only those liberal-leaning politicians who threw her under the bus, but they are also the ones who are keeping her under the bus.

Though Rice has been the perfect and dutiful “fall gal” for the Benghazi, Libya tale of an anti-Islamic film being the reason for the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack which killed four Americans including the United States Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stephens, her reward of being named Hillary Clinton’s replacement as United States Secretary of State seems to be vanishing more and more each day.

Her meetings with the Republican senators this week didn’t help her status at all. While the “left” continue to say the Republicans are picking on her, it’s becoming apparent that she is saying nothing that makes any unbiased person believe she had good reason to tell the “wrong story” about Benghazi on five television shows five days after the Benghazi terrorist attack.

Then, the latest travesty in the Susan Rice saga is the public information regarding her finances. It is now revealed that she is a multi-millionaire – to put it extremely mildly. The Democratic Party which has nothing kind to say about the nation’s wealthy and rode a year-long political campaign for president by disrespecting anyone of wealth in this country has another top achiever in its Party who is found to be grossly wealthy. The story that came out this week reveals that Rice owns anywhere from $300,002 to $600,000 in shares of stock in TransCanada – a company which, by the way, is trying to get approval to build the politically controversial Keystone XL pipeline. Beyond that, sources say that one-third of her extreme wealth is in foreign – not domestic – stocks.

As analysts and pundits trace the sources of her now-public controversial finances, it is reported that it is the political “left” that is revealing this latest information. Basically, it’s the “left” that is keeping Rice under the bus she was thrown under in September as it moves forwards and backwards, forwards and backwards, forwards and backwards, dirtying her public reputation and hopes of an advancement in Washington, D.C. The assumptions are several, all of which are not good for Susan Rice. She is assumed to have been continuously kept in the Benghazi, Libya headlines in an effort to keep President Barack Obama, the White House, and others out of the headlines. How long this effort to keep the spotlight on Rice instead of higher-ups succeeds is anybody’s guess. There is little chance, of course, that it will continue for four years throughout Obama’s entire second term.

As the negative stories pile on against Susan Rice and the sources of the information continue to lead back to her own political party, it is just a matter of time before Obama steps before the American people and offers a replacement other than Susan Rice for Secretary of State. After all, there is no hope that she will be confirmed by Congress with all these negative impressions trailing her.

The iPhone is quickly becoming the “go to” gadget for fans of photography and video and many are now using these features for business and marketing purposes. Enter Grant Wicks, a.k.a. “Professor Gadget,” Vice President of Business Development for Wasp Barcode Technologies and a Top 100 SMB Influencer. Grant has sourced many useful gadgets and turned his iPhone into a one man media studio for conducting on-the-go interviews.  Tune in as he joins Brent Leary to share some of these special finds so that you, too, can make the best use of the iPhone for business.

* * * * *

iphone photo and video for businessSmall Business Trends: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

Grant Wickes: I've been steeped in the technology world for 25, almost 30 years.  It has always been on the marketing and sales side of things with software companies.

Small Business Trends: What compelled you to get into “interview mode” at conferences?  To find all of these cools tools to turn your iPhone into a full blown production kit?

Grant Wickes: I don't come from T.V.  I don't come from radio.  I am not a big expert on these things.  But I have a passion to interact with folks.  As you said, going around to the various conferences.

I like to take photographs. I have all of the high end equipment, a big Cannon Digital SLR, with all the big lenses, which is fantastic. But I don't want to bring all of that stuff with me on the road. Then the iPhone came out and it really became an interesting platform.

I collapsed it down and found the iPhone really became the platform for me to be able to do photography. I got into it, this thing is a fantastic video machine.  So I did not have to bother with the camcorder any more.

Small Business Trends:  Can you talk about how you make them look good and sound great using the iPhone?

Grant Wickes: Sound is something people will not tolerate if there’s crackling. The iPhone has a built in microphone, but honestly, it's just a cheap little mic inside the phone.

With a little research, now you can get adaptable microphones.  There is one by Belkin that's called an iPhone Boom Mic that plugs right into your ear piece for the iPhone and sticks out about 4 or 5 inches and I can go around talking to people.

The second approach is the little lavalier mic that all the T.V. guys put on their collar. There is an adaptable unit from Audio Technica for $20. I can get a lavalier mic with a 20 foot cord, with another little $20 adapter that converts into the iPhone plug in. Now I have studio quality sound for an interview.

The other one, the Boom Mike, was around $40.

Small Business Trends: How do you get great lighting from a picture you take from your iPhone?

Grant Wickes: If you are out at an event or in a spot, you look for natural light. It is always the best approach. If I can get an outdoor setting where the sun is in the back, or if I can get an indoor sitting area that has a glass enclosure where outside light is coming in, that is always superb to do that.

But let's face it, we don't always have that luxury. For $30 for both, I have bought a couple of different LED lights. These things are small little white lights I turn on.

I have a bracket I can fit on the iPhone so that the light now shoots off to the side. It hangs out to the right side of the iPhone.  Because one of the things you try to avoid with light is having it directly in someone's face.

An iPhone with this little case for $23, with a $13 extension heading out there, with a $30 LED light, and $30 microphone, and I've got gadgets on the go.  I have studio quality on a shoe string budget.

I have these little gadgets in my bag. I can immediately have a quick conversation, it leads to an interesting discussion. Within less than five minutes, I am up and running. In less than ten minutes, you and I have finished the conversation. I have content that I can put up and share with my customers, or clients, or business prospects.

Small Business Trends: Did you see any difference, in terms of views or clicks, in the way people perceived the content?

Grant Wickes: There is no doubt. The good old days where you can have your flip cam and all of that noise in the background – that's really not acceptable anymore. So I do see it. I see it through Google Analytics the continued use and sharing of these video snippets that I take.

Small Business Trends: Where can people see these tips that you have talked about?

Grant Wickes: I am putting up a robust set on my Pinterest.

Small Business Trends: Where can people find some of these tools and these little gadgets?

Grant Wickes: There are two primary places I go for my gadgets. One is called Photojojo.  They are a fantastic little gadgets spot for iPhones.  Another is B&H Photo Video. It’s based in New York and is a store for photography.  They have all of these little gadgets I’ve picked up.

I didn't even talk to you about the 8x zoom lens I got from Photojojo to do shots. So we have to talk again Brent. There’s too much stuff to share with everyone in a short amount of time.

Small Business Trends: Since you mentioned that, what is that called?

Grant Wickes: That one is iPhone Lens by Photojojo. It is an 8x lens.  Now they have one for the iPhone 5 that takes you 12x. So it is like having a 600mm lens on your iPhone. It is $35. It's just fantastic!

Small Business Owners See Trouble Ahead
Nov 30th 2012, 13:12

Small business owners are expressing more uncertainty about the year ahead than they have since the financial crisis, according to a new survey.

The economy may be on the mend and politicians may be making progress on the fiscal cliff, but small business owners are expressing dire pessimism about the year ahead.

That's according to a fourth quarter survey released Friday morning from Wells Fargo and Gallup, which polled 607 small business owners in the week following the presidential election.

The numerical index upon which the survey is based fell 28 points into negative territory--the largest drop since the fourth quarter of 2010. More significantly, small business owner outlook for the next 12 months, an index component, tumbled 19 points, the largest drop since the fourth quarter of 2008, at the height of the financial collapse.

"We do not historically see movements this large," Marc Bernstein, head of Small Business for Wells Fargo, says.

In the next 12 months, small business owners said they would have less revenue, forecasted more layoffs, and indicated they expected capital spending and cash flow to become more constrained.

Among the things that may have contributed to future sentiments are uncertainty about the country's fiscal stability, taxes, and consumer spending, all of which could severely impact small business owners, Bernstein says.

Twenty-nine percent of those surveyed said revenues would decrease, compared to 18% in the previous quarter. Twenty-one percent said the number of jobs at their company would decrease, an increase of 11 percentage points from the previous quarter, and the highest reading in the history of the survey, which has been conducted quarterly since 2003.

More than one third of business owners said they expect to decrease capital spending in the year ahead, an increase of about 10 percentage points from the previous quarter. And nearly a third said they expect cash flow and their financial situations each to be poor, also the highest readings for the survey.

The current quarter also indicated significant problems during 2012. Nearly half of respondents reported decreased revenues for the prior 12 months, while 40% noted less capital spending, and more than a quarter reported layoffs. Those numbers all edged up from the prior quarter.

"I am hoping there were special factors that caused people to be pessimistic [after the election] that will be resolved next time we do the survey," Bernstein says. Wells Fargo has more than 2.5 million small business customers.

Lesser Prairie Chicken May Get Threatened Listing
Nov 30th 2012, 16:48

DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it is considering formally listing the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species.

Friday’s announcement begins a yearlong review that will include public meetings in four of the five states where the member of the prairie grouse family lives.

Fish and Wildlife says it made the decision based on evidence that the bird and its habitat are in decline. The agency already is working with state and federal agencies on a range-wide, voluntary conservation planning effort.

The chicken’s range includes parts of New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas but nearly 85 percent of its grass and brush-land habitat has been affected by ranching and farming.

Ranchers, farmers and wind farms operators worry about a listing because it could increase regulations.

Opinion: GOP A Party Without A Plan
Nov 30th 2012, 16:53

The Buck Starts Here

Yesterday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner brought the President’s $2 trillion deficit reduction plan to the Senate.

It included $1.6 trillion in new revenue and $400 billion in entitlement reform to Medicare, as well as $50 billion in infrastructure spending that will put more Americans to work.

It should be noted that unemployment is one of the leading contributors to our deficit – putting Americans back to work will by definition reduce government spending and increase tax revenues across the board.

The president’s proposal would also aid the financial markets by, one, ending the fear of the fiscal cliff, two, make a significant dent in the deficit and, three, eliminate the unconstitutional debt limit that Republican’s have used to undermine the global economy in the past.

It is also the only blueprint for deficit reduction any party has put forward.

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) went so far as to openly laugh at proposal and then countered with … nothing.

It seems that the same policy geniuses that proposed no specific plans for the Romney campaign have been employed by Congressional Republicans.

This highlights the one of the biggest problems for the Republican Party: they are leaderless and they are gutless.

The position of their leadership in Congress is that the president should save John Boehner and Mitch McConnell from their colleagues by putting forward a plan that Republicans can get behind.

If Republicans have spending cuts in mind, they should propose them. If not, they should shut up and vote rather than acting like toddlers screaming “this isn’t what I wanted.”

The fact is that a year and a half ago Republicans walked away from a $4 trillion deficit reduction framework. They did not want to give the President a victory – even if that meant doing harm to the U.S. economy.

Congressional Republicans went all in that they would win the November elections and get everything they wanted, but when voters were presented with the two options, Democrats won in a landslide.

The president won over 300 electoral votes. Democrats picked up a number of Senate seats in a year Republicans predicted they would take the Senate back.

While Republicans held on to the House, Democrats did win the House popular vote. More Americans voted for Democratic House candidates than Republicans. If not for gerrymandering, Democrats would control the House as well.

The one branch of government that Republicans do control is unwilling, or unable, to produce a Republican blueprint for deficit reduction.

With one month to go before we reach the fiscal cliff, Republicans are going to have to figure out how to do something serious for a change instead of grandstanding and avoiding specifics.

Right now, the ball is in their court.

4 Business-Friendly Tools From Pinterest
Nov 30th 2012, 15:58

From best practices to marketing buttons and widgets, here are some Pinterest resources to help you get more out of the platform.

Pinterest has gone from a curiosity, where people share images of things they like, to a Web powerhouse. This fall, the site beat Yahoo's organic traffic to become the fourth largest traffic driver on the Internet. It isn't just another social network.

Now Pinterest has taken more active interest in businesses and created four new sets of tools to help marketers improve their strategies on the site. Here's the rundown.

Verified identities

You want to be sure that people realize you are who you say you are, and that others can't try to ride on your coattails. To that end, you can use the website verification process, clicking the Verify Website button on your Pinterest settings page.

Buttons and widgets

Just as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and others have buttons or widgets that you can incorporate into your own site, Pinterest also has them:

  • Pin It button, so you can let people quickly pin things from your site
  • Follow button, inviting consumers to follow you on Pinterest
  • Profile widget, which shows up to 30 of your latest pins
  • Board widget that shows up to 30 of your favorite board's latest pins

The button and widget page lets you click one of the four types and provide your specifics. It shows a preview of what things will look like and provides the necessary code.

Get tips on future developments

Businesses will get updates on future services, so you can plan on how to change your use of Pinterest to best take advantage of new capabilities.

Learning what works

Perhaps the most important thing is to get insight into how others have used Pinterest in their marketing. To that end, there are three additional resources:

With the tools comes a new terms of service for businesses. They include giving Pinterest permission to "collect and use information from you and your users as described in our Privacy Policy," so it probably makes sense to review them in detail, so you (and your customers) can't be taken by surprise.
